Health and Dental Insurance – Possible to Have Both in One Plan?

Sometimes we get lucky enough to find an insurance plan that offers both health and dental insurance. And we have hit the jackpot if we have found an insurance plan that offers health, dental, and even optical insurance. However, many of us aren’t offered anything other than health coverage with our health insurance plans, which means we need to seek a dental health insurance plan; or, at least, some way to help cover the costs of dental treatment.

Many people choose not to purchase any kind of dental insurance plan, because they are young enough and have strong and healthy enough teeth to not need more than a couple of regularly scheduled cleanings a year, and maybe the occasional filling. These people will pay for these services out-of-pocket.

However, there are others who need some kind of dental insurance plan. Maybe they have a history of dental problems, or continuing dental work. Maybe they have a couple of children who need to regularly see a dentist. Whatever the reason, they need some kind of financial assistance – some kind of dental insurance plan.

There are actually several different kinds of dental insurance plans:

• Dental indemnity insurance, which is generally more expensive than any other kind of dental insurance but you do get to choose which dentist you want to visit.
• Dental Preferred Provider Organizations, also known as PPO’s and quite similar to health insurance PPOs. They are less expensive than dental indemnity insurance, but you do have to choose from a network of dentists.
• HMO dental insurance, which is also quite similar to health insurance HMOs. They are even less expensive than dental PPOs, plus they offer free routine and preventative services, though you must also choose from a network of dentists.

Each of these dental insurance plans is regulated by your state’s insurance department, so you can feel safe knowing that you are going to be protected.
