Unless your home is being financed no one in Iowa is going to force
you to buy homeowner's insurance. Yet even though many homeowners
are not required to pay for homeowner's insurance, the vast majority
still chose to do so.
Why?
Because for most people in Iowa their home is their biggest
investment and their most important asset, and it only makes good
economic sense that they would want to do everything possible to
protect their home.
Start by protecting your credit rating. Believe it or not, the
better your credit rating the lower your monthly premium for your
homeowner's insurance.
Protect your home from fire. Start by cutting all weeds and brush at
least ten feet away from all structures. If you can afford to
install a sprinkler system or a 24/7 monitoring system that alerts
fire or police in case of an emergency you may be able to save as
much as 20% to even 30% on your monthly homeowner's insurance
premium, but be sure to ask your insurance agent if the system you
are considering qualifies for the full discount.
Install the proper number of smoke and fire detectors and make
certain they all work properly. Install new batteries twice yearly.
Buy a fire extinguisher for your kitchen that is specially rated for
kitchen fires.
Making your home less of a target for burglars will also reduce your
monthly insurance premium.
Start by installing motion-sensitive flood lights around your home.
Next make certain that every exterior door has a working deadbolt
lock and that every window, even windows on upper floors, has a
working lock and that windows are kept locked.
Trim bushes away from all windows and doors so burglars have no
place to hide.
If your home is more than 10 or 15 years old talk to your agent
about how much you could save on your insurance if you up-graded
your plumbing or electrical system. Replace water hoses on all
appliances every couple of years and tell your agent that you have
made these up-grades.
Insure your home for the full cost of rebuilding your home from the
foundation up and for the replacement cost of all of your
possessions in case of a disaster – but do not make the mistake of
paying to insure the value of the land that your home sits on.
If you have other insurance policies with the same insurance company
make certain that you are getting your Multi-Policy Discount, and if
you have been with the same insurance company for at least 5 years
ask if you qualify for a Long-Term Discount.
O.K., now you should have a good idea of how to construct an
affordable homeowner's policy. The next step is to go online and
find several of the sites that allow for the quick and easy
comparison of policies and prices among several different insurance
companies.
But don't think that all you have to do is to make your comparisons
on just one site. The fact is no one site compares all insurance
companies in Iowa so if you are really serious about saving the most
money possible on your homeowner's insurance then you'll need to
take the time to make your comparisons on at least 3 different
sites.
In this way you can be more certain that you are seeing the best
prices at the largest number of companies so that you can truly
choose the best policy at the best possible price.
